Homeschool Tuesdays

The Greenville Zoo’s Education Department offers home school programs on a select Tuesday of each month for 5-7, 8-10, and 11-14 year olds. Classes include animals in the classroom, trips into the zoo, keeper talks and much more.
Please note: In January of 2010, age groups were adjusted to 5-7 years olds, 8-10 year olds and 11-14 year olds.

September 2010

The Facts of Life (9:30 am to 11 a.m.)
Join us as we discuss the web of life. We will construct a food web to learn how all living things are interconnected.

Animal Kingdom (9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.)
Learn what makes an invertebrate an invertebrate and a vertebrate a vertebrate as we take a bigger look at the five vertebrate classes.

The Carolinas have a big diversity of wildlife. Learn what could be living right in your own backyard.

Do you think all plants are alike? Join us as we discuss how plants are beneficial to both animals and people.

How does a whale navigate such a large habitat? Join us as we learn all about whales.

Track That Scat (9:30 am to 11 a.m.)
Scat—what's that? Animals often leave signs that they have been there. Learn why and how scientists identify scat.

EEEeeeek Bats (9:30 am to 11 a.m.)
Kids will discover that bats are mammals just like us, and that they are helpful to the environment in a variety of ways.

Survival of the Fittest (9:30 am to 11 a.m.)
We will illustrate animal behavioral responses such as hibernation, migration, defense, and courtship of animals.

Habitats and Adaptations (*See age group for times)
Animals are born with behaviors that allow them to live in their habitat. We will discuss and see first hand some of these traits in our animals.

Invertebrates Gone Wild (9:30 am to 11 a.m.)
Not only do invertebrates outnumber us but if you compare their strength to ours, some also overpower us, and some are even able to carry 9 times their body weight…WOW! Come with us as we explore the fascination world of arthropods and other invertebrates.

When is Mama hot and Daddy cool? The Zoo is host to parents from all around the world, come find out how they play an important role in their kid's survival.
